Essay Pre-Planning

Our task:

  • Describe a relationship between 2 or more characters in the text. Explain how this relationship helped you to understand at least 1 of the characters.
- My group chose Inan & Zelie. This relationship, helped me understand Zelie by showing 3 different main character traits. Open-minded, strong person and has a soft side. By researching into this relationship I found a lot of flaws about Zelie, and how she overcame everything she went through. To me, this was really inspiring.

Essay Pre-Writing

The incident of Amari & Zelie finding the scroll helped me to understand the idea of the power of friendship because with the help of each other and their determination they were able to get their hands on the scroll.
We see this in the text when they say " I expect to feel some aura in the scroll's presence."

The incident of Amari & Zelie finding the scroll helped me to understand the idea of the power of friendship between the two because at the very start of the book Amari & Zelie weren't exactly fond of each other. Though in the end, Zelie decided since Amari had the scroll she should probably make some amends.

Essay Pre-Planning

What we did today and where all this information came from:
( - We had to answer a series of questions about the post-reading for Children of blood and bone. We worked in random groups of 4 or less to answer, these questions. All this information came from the book and was found online. )

1. My key event is going to be the solstice.

2. My important character is going to be Zelie.

3. What are the three ways this character changed as a result of the event?

Children Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 74 – Inan
Note: This time you have not been provided a quote from the story. This is an
explanation.
King Saran firmly believes in duty over self. Peace between maji and kosidán
failed in the past, so he does not want to try again.
Inan believes he must make a similar choice between his country and his
heart. He makes the same choice as his father, even though the majacite
sword blisters his own skin (this is symbolism). Inan gives up everything to be
everything his Father wants.
This could be compared to / A message I take from this scene is

- The message I take away from this explanation is that King Saran has to put his people, his country before himself. Duty as a king (royal) is to always protect what your ruling over. Inan wants to give everything up to be best in his father's eyes because in my opinion, his feelings have gotten the better of him. Knowing his father feels proud, and adores him a bit more Inan's feelings, of course, start to feel positive blinding him into believing his father.

Children Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 61 – Zélie
Tears sear my vision, falling fast down my face. A Healer. A child.
Yet her last moments are stained with hate.

- A message I take from this is...that we shouldn't take our lives for granted. We should always be grateful for being safe and for what we have as we never know what could come in the future. This brave, thirteen year old stepped up in front of a royal army just to protect her people and take the consequences, we now know we should always be grateful for such people.

Child Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 59 – Zélie
“How will me coming back to Lagos solve any of that?” I ask. “As we speak,
your father calls for my head!”
“My father’s scared.” Inan shakes his head. “He’s misguided, but his fear is

justified. All the monarchy’s ever seen is the destruction maji can bring.
They’ve never experienced anything like this.” He gestures to the camp, face
alight with so much hope his smile practically glows in the darkness. “Zulaikha
created this in one moon, and there are already more diviners in Lagos than
anywhere else in Orïsha. Just imagine what we could accomplish with the
resources of the monarchy behind us.”

- A message I took away from this is, that in order to believe in something for the better you need to take risks. Follow your heart to what it truly decides, and see what happens along the way. Inan has seemed to convince Zelie, and potentially me as well in going back to Lagos in order to make a better, more peaceful Orisha. Who wouldn't want peace and zero wars? but what could the potential obstacles along the way be...

Child Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 52 – Amari

“I’ll prove myself to you, to all of you,” Inan declares.
“You’re on the right side of this. My only desire is to stand there as well.”
“Good.” I lean forward to hug him, holding on to his promise.
But when his hands wrap around my back, all I can think of are how his fingers
are resting just above my scars.
This could be compared to / A message I take from this scene is

- Do you trust Inan? Does he deserve a second chance?
At this point, I'm not really sure enough weather to trust him or not. What he did or tried to do, is really unforgivable, but if forgiving him means a peaceful accepting Orisha then who wouldn't forgive him? Although, I think once I read chapter 52 properly it might become more clear. Though his words do sound too convincing Amari.

- Do people in real life deserve second chances
Honestly, it depends on how big the situation is. If it's roughly minor and fixable then sure, but there are many things someone can do to put themselves in a awful situation which, could quite possible lead to no second chances.

Child Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 49 – Amari
Strike, Amari.
Father’s voice rings in my head, but it’s not his strength I need.
Be brave, Amari. Binta soothes instead.
Be the Lionaire.
King Saran sees the ability to hurt others as strength. Amari has realized that strength can
mean something else, as she learned from Binta. I believe strength comes from being strong
enough to do what is right.

- What I can take from this is, that encouragement is a big part of life. Although it can be coming from two different, people with two very different outlooks and views...having the strength and encouragement can really help boost someones confidence and really show them how to believe. So in conclusion, everyone should be encouraging and it really goes a long way.

The Power Of One ( My Assessment, Term 2 Reflections )

The Power Of One,
Is a novel by Australian author Bryce Courtenay, while also being made into a movie directed by John. G Avildson and produced by Arnon Milchan. Which the movie was released in 1992. The Power Of One, is a movie made about a young South African boy, who grows up while world war 2, is happening around him. He watches those who he loves, die before him as he continued to grow to become a boxer, being taught by an inmate Geel Piet, who got killed by a german soldier. As time went past, Justice for Geel Piet was served, Peekay became the boxer he had always dream of.

SEXXY PARAGRAPH 1

In this scene you can see that they have used a low angle camera shot effectively.
Director, John. G Avildson used a low angle shot, showing some of the prisoners, digging into the ground
during the on-going  running shot. The purpose of this shot was to come off strong due to the tools being hammered into the ground. Avildson, wanted to give off that the prisoners were often working  hard, in any condition. Showing that, working was to other people, only known purpose in life.
The technique created impact by letting the audience take a look at what the prisoners have to go through
in order to stay alive. It shows the reality they all had to go through, so the viewers could really see  that.
In conclusion this low angle technique that had shown the current inmates using tools to hammer the ground,
had been used to express a simple yet meaningful picture of reality. This technique was used to bring in a strong
difference as they were digging though Peekay was freely out was running.

SEXXY PARAGRAPH 2

- In this shot you can see they have secondly used a two shot within this scene.
The director has used this camera angle in order to fit both main characters of this scene
at the time into the one shot. The use of this shot was to simply be able to show both characters whom are talking, and are leading the scene and storyline at that moment. This shot made it easier for the audience to see, both PeeKay and one of the inmates having a conversation while running. This helps show meaning and more emotion to the audience, due to it being reflected off of both characters. Together this technique can be used effectively and often causing it to be easier for the audience. It was easy and understanding seeing both characters with emotion bouncing from one another. This way it was also easy for both characters, as they didn’t have to take single shots.

SEXXY PARAGRAPH 3

- Lastly a dolly/tracking shot was used effectively in this scene.
John. G Avildson had used this camera angle to give the whole main effect of running away.
Using this shot they had made their running look much more realistic than it could’ve been. Making the whole main point of this scene come alive. Using this camera angles makes it a more realistic experience for those watching, who now suddenly see the main characters at the time start running towards them. It also points out that this entire scene is completely on them. This consistent camera shot helps show whose in charge of the current scene, whilst following them. Following the characters makes a more realistic picture in your head while watching which causes a better definition to people.

Conclusion

In conclusion some of the main, camera techniques used were… a low angle shot, a two shot and lastly a dolly/tracking shot. A low angle shot created more of a realistic depth, with showing some of the prisoners hammering into the ground, like slaves. Whilst, the two shot was simply for fitting the two main characters at the time into the camera frame plus being able to actually see both of their emotions bounce off each other when communicating. And finally the dolly/tracking technique was used to help show viewers who was in control, and to hope that it created a more understanding feeling whilst following them.

My Reflection

I am proud of how well I used more detailed words such as, effectively in my paragraphs as it gave more detail and a better understanding to the scene. To improve next time, I could add more detailed evidence/examples in my body paragraphs. One thing I enjoyed learning about the film is... that I had developed more information about slavery in the 1930's, which also Incorporated world war 2 which was currently going on. The most challenging thing I found about learning the film was, how to get the exact film technique. I kept thinking, that it wasn't the proper technique that they had used. I found TAKO and SEXXY really useful when writing my paragraphs! What I'm wondering is if I'll ever be able to use this in real life.

Child Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 36 - Zélie
“Those are father’s words, Inan. His decisions. Not yours. We are our own
people. We make our own choices.”
“But he’s right.” Inan’s voice cracks. “If we don’t stop magic, Orïsha will fall.”

His eyes return to me, and I tighten my grip on my staff. Try it, I want to bark.
I’m done running away.
Amari redirects Inan’s line of vision, her delicate hands cupping the back of his
head.
“Father is not the future of Orïsha, brother. We are. We stand on the right side
of this. You can stand there, too.”
Inan stares at Amari, and for a moment I don’t know who he is. The ruthless
captain; the little prince; the scared and broken maji? There’s a longing in his
eyes, a desire to give up the fight. But when he lifts his chin, the killer I know
comes back.

The message I got from this chapter was...firstly, your future is for you decide and not have to follow in line of your older generations. If you don't want to follow in line of something, you don't have to. Secondly, I also picked up that you may be playing safe in order to get something, but in the end we all know desire sparks something within us and helps drive us towards that something.

Child Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 28 – Amari
Be brave, Amari.
This time I hold onto Binta’s words, wrapping them around my body like a suit
of armor. I can be brave.

I think this relates to the real world by... taking advice and believing in yourself. People close to us, often say the most remember-able things that make our heart race and can often encourage us to believe in ourselves. We take someones words, and hold onto them as of their the most precious things in the world.

Child Of Blood And Bone

Chapter 26 - Inan
“How long?” she breathes. “How long have you been a maji?”
She hisses the word like it’s a curse. Like I’m the spitting image of Lekan. Not
the boy she’s known since birth. The soldier she’s trained for years.
“The girl infected me. It’s not permanent.”
“You’re lying.” Her lips peel back in disgust. “Are you…are you working with
her?”
“No! I was looking for clues!” I step forward. “I know where she is–”
“Stay back!” Kaea screams. I freeze, hands in the air. There’s no recognition in
her eyes.
Only unbridled fear.

This can relate to the real world by...people having possible split personalities. You can think you know someone inside and out but, in reality you may not. Emotion over powers us into doing things we don't mean, especially when we get into dramatic fights over someone.
